Oh Canada!

Typically long weekends are something that us teachers look forward to with eyes watching the clock and drool running down our chins. Teaching is such an all-consuming job that any time off is time to be savoured. Canada Day weekend is usually just another weekend to us because we have it off anyway, and being on mat leave this is even more true, since almost every day is like a weekend!
That being said, I don't think this Canada Day weekend could have been any more relaxing or fun-filled.
Friday night Alycia came down to visit and we went out for appetizers and a Cotton Candy Martini before seeing the movie Magic Mike. So good - too much plot though ;)
Saturday morning we woke up and it was just hot, hot, hot. We needed to find water. After striking out at Drew's mom's pool due to her brother building her a new deck, we decided to head to the beach. Madi had a blast splashing around in the water with Daddy and Uncle J and Mya and I relaxed under an umbrella. We were starving so on the way back we stopped at a take out place that we have driven past a zillion times but never stopped in at. Why? I'm not sure because their food was sooooo good. I had pulled pork and Drew has beef brisket and I have a feeling we won't be driving past The Smoking Pig without stopping any more.
That night we went to Drew's cousin's wife's (got that??) surprise 30th birthday party. We couldn't stay late because Madi had a long day in the sun and needed to get to bed.
Sunday, of course, was the big day. Last year Drew and I were blown away with the Grand Bay-Westfield Canada Day celebrations. Madi was a bit young to fully enjoy them at that point but this year was different. We got the girls dressed in their matching t-shirts, complete with white and red hair clips and red sparkly sneaks for Madi and headed down. It was hot but there was a breeze which was nice because we ended up staying for awhile. Between the bouncy castles, kids entertainment, cookie decorating, cotton candy, balloon animals, freezies and tattoos, we had a busy couple of hours.

It was still so hot out that we decided to go get a pool for the backyard. It was a big hit...even for the big kids.

Non & G-Pa invited us out to their house for a Canada Day supper. We had burgers and chicken skewers, potato salad and red and white chips, beer and even a Canada Day ice cream cake.

We decided to take a risk and keep Madi up for the fireworks in Saint John. We met Auntie Coco and Uncle Randy in town and unfortunately Madi got a little freaked out before they even started (thanks, Coco.) I think it was more a function of being overtired than actual fear of them because though she kind of cried through them, she watched them too.
Sunday everyone slept in until 8am - even Mya-Bean! We mostly had a relaxing day around home  playing and reading and eating and relaxing.
